Exercise & Wellbeing for All Ages

4th Feb 19

Exercise is one of the best ways to improve mental well-being. This is true for everyone (even children & young people). The benefits of regular exercise can have a profoundly positive impact on depression, anxiety, ADHD, and all-round mental well-being. Exercise relieves stress, improves memory, helps you sleep better, and boosts your overall mood. Sleep is important because, without enough sleep, our mood is negatively affected.

Why does exercise have such a good reputation?

Exercise makes you feel good because it releases the chemicals called endorphins and serotonin that improve mood.

It can be the first sign of us looking after ourselves, taking pride in our appearance, wanting to lose weight or simply improving our mood. Exercise can simply be done to improve our mental health.

If you haven’t exercised for a while, try setting a challenge for yourself – not running a marathon in a month’s time – small steps – the last thing you need to do is put yourself off before you’ve begun.

Workout:

Day 1:

Walk for 10 minutes – take the children in the pram or get them to walk with you.

Day 2:

Day 3:

Day 4:

Day 5:

Rest

Day 7:

You get the idea, I’m sure…

This type of challenge enables you to take your time whilst developing your relationship with exercise. Don’t rush into pushing yourself so hard that you end up with an injury or feeling bad about not hitting your own personal targets; this won’t help your mental health.
